Chapter Nine

Velva decided she was hungry after a half an hour or so of playing. John and Benji watched her and Destiny leave, then John tried to calm the butterflies in his belly as he turned to look at Benji. Would they resume where they’d left off, maybe back at his place? John could explain who Henry was—but would Benji believe him, after his own confessions and Benji’s experience with Derek?

Benji pursed his lips as if considering something. “The other guy last night, he wasn’t just a friend though.”

John’s butterflies turned to lead and dropped heavily in his stomach. “He wasn’t?” he got out.

“No.” Benji still wasn’t looking at him. “He was just someone to get off with. It was okay.”

“I don’t need a rundown of it,” John snapped. He closed his eyes and tried to get control of himself. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

Benji sounded strange, but when John dared to peek at him he couldn’t see that anything was off. “No. I mean, I told you about Shane—”

“Shane?” There was that puckering of Benji’s lips again. “That’s a horrible name. It’s like an old guy name.”

John let out a snort before he could stop himself. “That’s ageism or something, I’m sure.”

“Whatever.” Benji shrugged. “I don’t like him.”

John wanted desperately to ask if it was because of him, but couldn’t bring himself to do so. He knew how he felt about Derek and the guy in the parking lot. John wanted to punch them both.

Benji kicked at the ground. “But, you can see him again, I’m not saying anything like you can’t. I mean, I’m attracted to you, duh, but there’s still a lot of shit I’m dealing with. I’m not ready for anything heavy.”

John wouldn’t let the pain show. It shouldn’t hurt, anyway. Benji wasn’t outright rejecting him. But… “What does that mean, for us?”

Benji stopped toeing the ground but still didn’t look at John when he answered. “Well, I’d like to take you back to my place, but it’s Gramps’ place not mine, and he’s open-minded but I’m not sure he’s that open-minded. How about your place?”

John started to agree, then remembered Henry, sleeping in his bed. He was afraid this was going to end badly. Still, he cupped Benji’s chin and urged him to turn his head. Benji’s resistance only lasted a moment, then he met John’s gaze.

“The thing is, I’m afraid you won’t believe me when I say this, but it’s the truth.” God, he hoped he was wrong and Benji didn’t think he was a liar. “There’s my best friend, Henry, asleep in my bed. We didn’t—we don’t ever do anything together, not anything sexual, I swear.”

Benji had quit looking at him before he finished the second sentence, but he hadn’t pulled away.

“Benji, I mean it. He’s my friend, and he’ll tell you that, too.”

Waiting for Benji to speak or show him something, some feeling at all, was going to give John an ulcer. He’d swear his stomach was burning already. Benji moved and pulled his chin free.
